Dr. Saeid Amini of the University of Kashan Named National Distinguished Researcher

Dr. Saeid Amini, a faculty member at the University of Kashan, has been named a National Distinguished Researcher.

At the 26th National Festival of Distinguished Researchers, Technologists, and Innovators, held at the International Conference Center of Shahid Beheshti University and attended by the Minister of Science, Research and Technology, Dr. Saeid Amini, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kashan, was honored as a National Distinguished Researcher.

According to the Public Relations Office of the Ministry of Science, Dr. Hossein Simaei, speaking at the 26th Festival honoring distinguished researchers, technologists, and innovators of the country, which was held on Tuesday at the International Conference Hall of Shahid Beheshti University, commemorated the martyrs of the twelve-day war, especially those of Shahid Beheshti University. He congratulated the academic community on National Research and Technology Week and thanked the organizers of the event, describing research as the foundation of scientific development. He said, “The reality is that we have not yet fully embraced the necessity of research. The development of the country without research is impossible, and even quality education requires up-to-date research.”

He added that by reviewing Iran’s entry into modernity and the experience of Abbas Mirza after defeats in the Iran–Russia wars, it becomes clear that instead of lamenting, Abbas Mirza chose to send students abroad as a solution. “Today, more than ever, we are in need of science and research,” he said.

The Minister of Science emphasized that the two main goals of research are “the production of knowledge and advancing at the frontier of science” and “solving the country’s problems.” He noted that the Supreme Leader has repeatedly stressed that in the field of research, Iran must both consolidate its scientific authority in the world and respond to domestic needs.

He stated that recently a perception has emerged questioning whether the country needs academic articles. “Scientific growth is not possible without research and publications,” he said. “Iran’s per capita article production should reach 1.5 papers per faculty member, but it is currently 0.9, while in some countries it is three or four.”

Dr. Simaei added that there are also major challenges: insufficient financial support for researchers, weak laboratory infrastructure, reduced international cooperation, and restrictive attitudes toward science. “Science knows no borders, and its nature is global. Scientific development does not occur in isolation or seclusion; rather, it requires interaction, investment, and belief in the status of research,” he said.

He noted that a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, under which industrial investment in universities will be recognized as tax-deductible expenses. Accordingly, once a university confirms an investment, the Tax Affairs Organization will officially recognize it.

Continuing his remarks, the Minister said that another program has been devised under which substantial research grants will be provided by the government. In the first year, 5,000 professors and students will be involved, and the program will gradually expand. “To solve the country’s problems, a systematic approach is required,” he said. “For example, in addressing the water crisis, a 60-member research core of specialists from various fields was formed, who, alongside relevant executive bodies, prepared a national plan within three months and presented it to the President.”

He further stated that in the field of science, the exchange of professors and students and joint projects must be recognized. Another proposal has been submitted to the President, under which 2,000 faculty members and students annually will be sent on study opportunities, with their costs and facilities covered. “Science and technology are no longer decorative commodities; for our national security, we must equip ourselves with up-to-date science,” he said.

In conclusion, Dr. Simaei emphasized the necessity of revising university education. In this regard, two university research institutes have been tasked with developing a model with fewer shortcomings for education.
